Italian invasion British Somaliland
in august 1940, during east african campaign in world war ii, british somaliland invaded italy. few british forces present attempted defend main road berbera, dislodged positions , forced retreat after battle of tug argan. during period, british rounded soldiers , governmental officials evacuate them territory through berbera. in total, 7,000 people, including civilians, evacuated. somalis serving in somaliland camel corps given choice of evacuation or disbandment; majority chose remain , allowed retain arms.
in march 1941, after six-month italian occupation, british imperial forces recaptured protectorate during operation appearance. final remnants of italian guerrilla movement discontinued resistance in british somaliland fall of 1943.
