on 1 april 1927, shoup , 9 other officers pulled training accompany detachment of marines sent china protect american interests during instability of chinese civil war. embarking san diego 2nd battalion, 10th marines, shoup s contingent play defensive role, , not engage in military action. still, opposed mission, feeling americans in china exploiting people. contingent landed in shanghai on 10 june aboard uss chaumont. initially, conducted shore patrol around american sections of city. on 5 july battalion moved tientsin protect american interests there should chinese nationalist troops threaten them. shoup became ill there, , remained hospitalized until announced u.s. troops leave. briefly returned shanghai oversee foreign troop departures 4th marines, before departed china on 7 december 1928.
following assignment, shoup returned united states , completed training. spent short stints @ marine bases in quantico, virginia, pensacola, florida, , san francisco, california. june 1929 september 1931 served marine detachment aboard uss maryland, coached boxing , wrestling squads. following duty assigned marine corps recruit depot san diego. in may 1932 ordered puget sound navy yard in bremerton, washington, promoted first lieutenant 1 month later. served on temporary duty civilian conservation corps in idaho , new jersey june 1933 may 1934, after returned bremerton.
shoup went china in november 1934, again serving briefly 4th marines in shanghai. reassigned legation guard in peiping, taught post s pistol , rifle teams shoot competitively. won @ least 1 major competition. had time observe troops of empire of japan, gaining great respect discipline. in 1936, came down serious case of pneumonia , had evacuated china. next duty @ puget sound navy yard. in october 1936, promoted captain. in july 1937 entered junior course, marine corps schools in quantico, completed in may 1938. served instructor @ quantico 2 years. in june 1940 joined 6th marines in san diego, , promoted major in april 1941.
