the impulsoria in 1850


crestadoro improved design of unusual device called impulsoria, mobile treadmill-powered locomotive. invention made clemente masserano, pignerol in italy. following improvements crestadoro exhibited impulsoria @ great exhibition held in crystal palace in 1851. power transferred wheels using chains , gearbox allowed climb. said able pull 30 wagons incline , used 2 or 4 horses.


another suggestion crestadoro replace paddle wheels or propellors on steamships smooth cylinder. argued paddles or propellor blades unnecessary, proposing smooth cylinders instead, suggested gain traction being immersed in water.


crestadoro given task of creating catalogue manchester library. credited being first person propose books catalogued using keywords did not occur in title of book. system called keyword in titles, first proposed manchester libraries in 1864. system developed many years later key word in context (kwic) hans peter luhn , used in computer based indexing.
