duties

duties of president described in constitution are;



ensure constitution respected , upheld;
promote national reconciliation , integration;
ensure , facilitate proper functioning of constitutional council , other institutions;
on advice of election commission, ensure creation of proper conditions conduct of free , fair elections , referenda.

constitutional powers

presidents have little constraints on power. president shall responsible parliament, , can impeached two-thirds majority in parliament. president may declare war , peace. can place country in state of emergency, under can override law passed , promulgate regulation without needing legislative approval. however, prolong state of emergency more month parliamentary approval needed.


parliamentary powers

the president has right attend parliament once in every 3 months privileges, immunities , powers of member of parliament, other entitlement vote, , shall not liable breach of privileges of parliament or of members. he/she has right address or send messages parliament. he/she has power make statement of government policy in parliament @ commencement of each session of parliament (speech throne), preside @ ceremonial sittings of parliament, summon, prorogue , dissolve parliament.


administrative powers

the president head of executive, such keep public seal of republic, , make , execute under public seal numerous appointments includes prime minister, cabinet , non-cabinet ministers, provincial governors, public officers, ambassadors , commissioned officers of armed forces. president may appoint secretaries, officers , staff carryout duties of office of president. grants , dispositions of lands , other immovable property vested in republic.


juridical powers

the president have power appoint , remove, chief justice, justices of supreme court, justices of court of appeal , judges of high court. president may grant pardon, respite or substitute less severe form of punishment punishment imposed offender convicted of offence in court within republic of sri lanka. president has immunity both civil or criminal proceedings. president has power commission public inquires appointing presidential commission of inquiry investigate issue.


diplomatic powers

the president have power receive , recognize, , appoint , accredit ambassadors, high commissioners, plenipotentiaries , other diplomatic agents.


ceremonial duties

the president important ceremonial role in terms of state ceremonies, functions , in awarding state awards. notable traditional throne speech delivered president parliament outlining official policy statement of new government parliament.. president lead independence day celebrations other national ceremonies such remembrance day, wap magul (ceremonial ploughing) , receive perahera sandeshaya. national honors awarded president on behalf government of sri lanka. president receive letter of credence foreign ambassadors.

the president has power appoint senior attorneys-at-laws position of president s counsel. president may appoint officers armed forces serve aide-de-camp extra-aide-de-camp. additionally, president may appoint medical officers of armed forces honorary physician president , honorary surgeon president.
