duties
duties of president described in constitution are;
ensure constitution respected , upheld;
promote national reconciliation , integration;
ensure , facilitate proper functioning of constitutional council , other institutions;
on advice of election commission, ensure creation of proper conditions conduct of free , fair elections , referenda.
constitutional powers
presidents have little constraints on power. president shall responsible parliament, , can impeached two-thirds majority in parliament. president may declare war , peace. can place country in state of emergency, under can override law passed , promulgate regulation without needing legislative approval. however, prolong state of emergency more month parliamentary approval needed.
parliamentary powers

the president have power appoint , remove, chief justice, justices of supreme court, justices of court of appeal , judges of high court. president may grant pardon, respite or substitute less severe form of punishment punishment imposed offender convicted of offence in court within republic of sri lanka. president has immunity both civil or criminal proceedings. president has power commission public inquires appointing presidential commission of inquiry investigate issue.
diplomatic powers
the president have power receive , recognize, , appoint , accredit ambassadors, high commissioners, plenipotentiaries , other diplomatic agents.
