Origins of the series Youngblood (comics)

a sneak preview of series appeared in malibu sun #1 (february 1992), published image through malibu comics, provided administrative, production, distribution, , marketing support image s publications. on march 13, 2 separate 5½ x 8½″ black-and-white ashcan editions of youngblood began surface, each featuring 1 of 2 separate stories youngblood #1. edition featured 13-page lead story, while edition b featured other side of flip book, along 4 pages of art not included in youngblood #1. according image comics spokesperson john beck, print run on edition 1,000 copies, , edition b limited 500 copies.


youngblood #1 (april 1992) first image comics publication. @ time of release, highest selling independent comic book published, despite receiving poor reviews critics. unclear storytelling effected both liefeld s art, , book s flip format, readers found confusing; poor anatomy; incorrect perspective; non-existent backgrounds; poor dialogue , late shipping of book, problem continued subsequent issues. in interview in hero illustrated #4 (october 1993), liefeld conceded disappointment first 4 issues of youngblood, calling first issue disaster . explained production problems, sub-par scripting friend , collaborator hank kanalz, employment liefeld later terminated, resulted in work lower in quality liefeld produced when fabian nicieza scripted plots on x-force, , reprints of 4 issues re-scripted. writer , columnist peter david pointed liefeld s scapegoating of kanalz example of liefeld s failure take responsibility project, , evidence genuine collaboration writers louise simonson , fabian nicieza, of image founders did not appreciate, had reflected better on liefeld s art. throughout run @ image, youngblood, other books published liefeld s extreme studios, attacked critics late issues , inconsistent quality.


in 1993, liefeld solicited writer kurt busiek youngblood stories. busiek wrote detailed plots 3 issues , ideas fourth, under proposed title: youngblood: year one. never produced, plot lines revived amid controversy years later.


in mid-1990s, liefeld had falling out image partners, forcing him leave company , take youngblood him.
