none of sturt highway constructed dual-carriageway, work commenced in january 2007 upgrade highway 2 lanes each way dual carriageway between gawler bypass , greenock in barossa valley. project completed in 2010 budget savings directed towards further sturt highway improvements.


the northern expressway, renamed max fatchen expressway in 2013, built @ south-western end of sturt highway, extending route a20 22 km gawler southwest meet port wakefield road (national route a1) @ waterloo corner part of auslink/south australian government project build new dual-carriageway/freeway standard road part of north–south corridor project. provide better access road transport port adelaide , industrial areas west , northwest of city. completed has made sturt highway dual-carriageway/freeway standard between adelaide , barossa valley.


other projects in south australia include: number of overtaking lanes have been added in recent years make safer high volume of traffic. major s -bend curves near waikerie realigned, , further upgrades road performed 2012.


significant route changes

the original route of sturt highway in riverland passed through berri , glossop instead of current route through monash. former alignment known old sturt highway, route b201. original route passed through middle of barossa valley along barossa valley way. first changed route passing north of nuriootpa around north , west of gawler on gawler bypass road , main north road gepps cross. later changed use max fatchen expressway instead. more recent road duplication led bypassing daveyston , shea-oak log instead of passing through these small towns.
