while working @ london bookshop owned david garnett , francis birrell, became acquainted lytton strachey, dora carrington , ralph partridge. in 1921, ralph partridge had married dora carrington, in love lytton strachey, homosexual himself more interested in partridge. added complication dora carrington s intermittent affair 1 of partridge s best friends, gerald brenan. carrington, partridge, , strachey shared wiltshire farm-house, ham spray, in complex triangular relationship (later recorded in 1995 film carrington, alex kingston playing frances).


ralph partridge fell in love frances. lived in london during week , repaired ham spray @ weekends. after dora carrington committed suicide out of grief in 1932, shortly after lytton strachey s death, ralph , frances married on 2 march 1933. lived happily @ ham spray until ralph s death in 1960.


they had 1 son, (lytton) burgo partridge, born in 1935 , named strachey. in 1962, burgo married henrietta garnett, daughter of angelica garnett , david garnett, henrietta pregnant daughter. died of heart failure on 7 september 1963, 3 weeks after birth of baby, sophie vanessa. had been noticed writing ability, , had published 1 well-received book, history of orgies (1958).


frances sold ham spray , moved london. writings, membership of bloomsbury circle, great personal charm , energy retained extreme old age ensured degree of celebrity towards end of life.


she awarded commander of order of british empire in millennium new year honours.
