original slayer drummer dave lombardo rejoined band in 2001 after nine-year hiatus, , performed on albums christ illusion (2006) , world painted blood (2009) before departing once again in 2013.


the album christ illusion scheduled release on june 6, 2006, , first album original drummer lombardo since 1990 s seasons in abyss. however, band decided delay release of record did not want among many, according king, half-ass, stupid fucking loser bands releasing records on june 6, although usa today reported idea thwarted because band failed secure sufficient studio recording time. slayer released eternal pyre on june 6 limited-edition ep. eternal pyre featured song cult, live performance of war ensemble in germany , video footage of band recording cult. 5 thousand copies released , sold exclusively through hot topic chain stores, , sold out within hours of release. on june 30, nuclear blast records released 7 vinyl picture disc version limited thousand copies.


christ illusion released on august 8, 2006, , debuted @ number 5 on billboard 200, selling on 62,000 copies in first week. album became slayer s highest charting, improving on previous highest charting album, divine intervention, had debuted @ number 8. however, despite high positioning, album dropped number 44 in following week. 3 weeks after album s release slayer inducted kerrang! hall of fame influence heavy metal scene.


a worldwide tour dubbed unholy alliance tour, undertaken support new record. tour set launch on june 6, postponed june 10, araya had undergo gall bladder surgery. in flames, mastodon, children of bodom, lamb of god, , thine eyes bleed (featuring araya s brother, johnny) , ted maul (london hammersmith apollo) supporting slayer. tour made way through america , europe , bands participated, apart thine eyes bleed, reunited perform @ japan s loudpark festival on october 15, 2006.


the video album s first single, eyes of insane, released on october 30, 2006. track featured on saw iii soundtrack, , won grammy-award best metal performance @ 49th grammy awards, although band unable attend due touring obligations. week later, band visited 52nd services squadron located on spangdahlem u.s. air force base in germany meet , play show. first visit ever military base band. band made first network tv appearance on show jimmy kimmel live! on january 19, playing song eyes of insane, , 4 additional songs fans after show (although footage jihad cut due controversial lyrical themes).


slayer toured australia , new zealand in april mastodon, , appeared @ download festival, rock ring, , summer tour marilyn manson , bleeding through. band released special edition of christ illusion, featured new cover art , bonus track, final six, given grammy award best metal performance. band s second consecutive award in category.
