the name comes ottawa indian chief, chief pet-o-sega. city of petoskey, michigan, named after him, , center of area stones found. stones commonly found on beaches , in sand dunes.


according legend, petosegay descendant of french nobleman , fur trader, antoine carre , ottawa princess. petosegay, meaning rising sun , rays of dawn or sunbeams of promise , named after rays of sun fell upon newborn face. in keeping promising name, petosegay wealthy fur trader gained land , acclaim himself , tribe. remarked upon have striking , appealing appearance, , spoke english well. married ottawa, , had 2 daughters , 8 sons. in summer of 1873, few years before chief s passing, city began on land along little traverse bay. settlers christened newborn city petoskey, anglicized form of petosegay.
