in 1945, players of former sk ljubljana joined newly founded Šd tabor , Šd udarnik sports clubs, , formed club called nk enotnost.

as result of slovenian independence , breakup of yugoslavia, olimpija agreed join newly formed slovenian league. inaugural 1991–92 season included number of clubs lower tiers of yugoslav football league. average attendance @ olimpija s matches dropped 7,380 in 1989–90 1,075 in 1991–92.

after finishing first half of season in second place 3 points behind maribor, olimpija had string of results after winter break , ended season eleven consecutive wins brought them first slovenian league title. team final match included robert englaro, aleš Čeh, dejan djuranovič , sandi valentinčič, , coached lučjom pertičem.

in 2003–04 uefa cup olimpija beat irish side shelbourne in qualifying round 4–2 on aggregate. in next round met liverpool, , took lead through captain anton Žlogar s goal, first leg @ bežigrad stadium ending in 1–1 draw michael owen scored eqaliser 12 minutes time. olimpija s last european season cut short soundly beaten 3–0 through goals anthony le tallec, emile heskey , harry kewell in away leg @ anfield.

olimpija had string of mixed results remainder of season, getting knocked out in round of 16 of 2003–04 slovenian cup , finishing runners-up in 2003–04 slovenian prvaliga. however, sponsors (including schollmayer) decided abandon club @ end of season led serious financial difficulties club. following schollmayer s exit, olimpija forced sell of players. although club had started competing in 2004–05 championship, club had struggled on pitch , failed obtain competition licences issued football association of slovenia, led dissolution. club, debt consisting of on 700 million slovenian tolars (around 3 million euros in 2004 exchange rate), filed bankruptcy , dissolved end of year. however, football association of slovenia had exceptionally allowed club finish 2004–05 season and, after finishing sixth in national championship, olimpija ceased operations.

a successor club claims rights olimpija s honours , records established in 2005 (originally called nk bežigrad) , compete in slovenian top flight bearing name olimpija ljubljana. however, in spite of inheriting old olimpija s supporters , colours, not legally considered successors original olimpija , 2 clubs track records , honours kept separate football association of slovenia , association of 1. snl. however, english-language sources regard current olimpija club continuation of original club.

amid political turmoil in 1990s, during breakup of yugoslavia, olimpija began claiming direct lineage ilirija, association football club established in 1911. during time olimpija added year 1911 on official club crest first time in history. ilirija, member of slovenian second league @ time , ljubljana based club football association of slovenia officially refers founded in 1911, have criticized olimpija actions , accused them of unilaterally appropriating history.
