the station situated on trackbed of london , north western railway s brynmawr , blaenavon railway closed passengers on 5 may 1941 , goods on 23 june 1954. in september 1971, section of line between waenavon , blaenavon furnace sidings relaid national coal board opencast mine workings. relaid section came use in march 1972 , carried approximately 1000 tons of coal per day until june 1975 when mine workings ceased , line clipped out of use on 18 august. private siding agreement concluded coal board reinstatement of section not terminated until 30 april 1980, after track removed. section cwmbran big pit, blaenavon subsequently sold pontypool , blaenavon railway.


steam workings on pontypool , blaenavon commenced on 11 august 1984 , station opened @ whistle inn on 30 april 1988. beyond station north garn-yr-erw halt. whistle inn, takes name adjacent public house, line s northern terminus , highest point @ 1,307 feet (398 m) above sea level.
