in addition federal rules of civil procedure, many of u.s. district courts have developed own requirements included in local rules filing court. local rules can set limit on number of pages, establish deadlines motions , responses, explain whether acceptable combine motion petition response, specify if judge needs additional copy of documents (called judge’s copy ), etc. local rules can define page layout elements like: margins, text font/size, distance between lines, mandatory footer text, page numbering, , provide directions on how pages need bound – i.e. acceptable fasteners, number , location of fastening holes, etc. if filed motion not comply local rules judge can choose strike motion completely, or order party re-file motion, or grant special exception local rules.
according federal rules of civil procedure (frcp) 5.2, sensitive text social security number, taxpayer identification number, birthday, bank accounts , children’s names, should redacted filings made court , accompanying exhibits, (however, exhibits not need attached original complaint, should presented court after discovery). redacted text can erased black-out or white-out, , page should have indication redacted - stamping word redacted on bottom. alternately, filing party may ask court’s permission file exhibits under seal. minor s name of petitions should replaced initials.
a person making redacted filing can file unredacted copy under seal, or court can choose order later additional filing made under seal without redaction. copies of both redacted , unredacted documents filed court should provided other parties in case. courts require additional electronic courtesy copy emailed other parties.
