on 14 august, overall operation phantom thunder ended , operation arrowhead ripper ended 19 august. baqubah largely secured coalition forces, still insurgent presence remained in city , surrounding areas, not in such large numbers before attack on city.

lightning hammer launched on 13 august 2007 follow-on operation arrowhead ripper , subordinate operation phantom strike. aim of operation clear insurgent elements diyala river valley , involved around 16,000 , iraqi forces. during operation, 50 villages in diyala province cleared, 26 members of aqi killed , 37 suspected insurgents detained. on 1 september, operation ended. lightning hammer ii launched in september.
