biography
early years

william steel born on september 7, 1854, in stafford, ohio, elizabeth lawrie , william steel, abolitionists active in underground railroad. family included brother, george a. steel, became treasurer of oregon, , sister, jane, attended st. mary s school.


on march 25, 1868 steel family moved pittsburgh, pennsylvania farm near oswego, kansas. in may 1870, william, kansas school boy, read newspaper wrapped around lunch discovery of crater lake.


first visit crater lake

steel traveled crater lake in 1885, traveling railroad , stagecoach fort klamath. after that, walked 20 miles, arriving on august 15, 1885. steel published articles in march 1886 issue of west shore describing reactions viewed lake first time.
