hyderabad 82,000 square mile (212,000 km²) region in deccan, ruled head of asif jahi dynasty, had title of nizam , on whom bestowed style of exalted highness british. last nizam, osman ali khan, 1 of world s richest men in 1930s. hyderabad s muslim nizams ruled on predominantly hindu population.


in 1798, nizam ʿĀlī khan (nizam ali khan nizam-ul-mulk (asaf jah ii)) forced enter agreement put hyderabad under british protection. first indian prince sign such agreement. consequently, hyderabad senior-most (23-gun) salute state during period of british india. crown retained right intervene in case of misrule.


hyderabad under nizam ali khan(asif jah ii) british ally in second , third maratha wars (1803–05, 1817–19), , remained loyal british during indian rebellion of 1857 (1857–58).
