houkisugi @ nakagawa estimated more 2000 years old. height 45 metres (148 ft). circumference @ head height 12 metres (39 ft). circumference around root 18 metres (59 ft). designated national natural monument on march 26, 1934. tree revered locals because prevented great fire spreading in 1904. there still visible fire damage on tree. on july 12, 1972, stopped great landslide , lessened damage during heavy rainfall in tanzawa mountains.
