written , illustrated rumiko takahashi, ranma ½ began publication in weekly shōnen sunday issue #36 of 1987, following ending of series urusei yatsura. september 1987 until march 1996, manga published on near weekly basis occasional colored page spruce black , white stories. after decade of storylines, final chapter published in weekly shōnen sunday issue #12 of 1996. 407 chapters periodically collected , published shogakukan total of 38 black , white tankōbon volumes 1988 1996. reassembled 38 shinsōban april 2002 october 2003.
north american publisher viz media released ranma ½ in monthly comic book format contained 2 chapters each 1992 2003, , had images flipped read left-to-right, causing art mirrored. these periodically collected graphic novels. on march 18, 2004, after releasing 21 volumes, viz announced reprint number of graphic novels. content remained same, novels moved smaller format different covers , price drop. each volume covers same amount of material japanese volumes, retained left-to-right format , had minor differences in grouping spans 36 volumes rather original 38. final volume released in stores on november 14, 2006, making viz s longest running manga, spanning on 13 years. @ anime expo on july 7, 2013, viz media announced begin re-releasing manga in format combines 2 individual volumes single large one. first volume published on march 11, 2014, marks first time series has been released in north america in original right-to-left format. madman entertainment publishes two-in-one version in australasia.
