the marsh shrew , american water shrew (sorex pallustris) share many physical characteristics. former found in narrower area northwest coast lower slopes of inland mountains. american water shrew more distributed across western mountains , through subarctic regions of canada , eastern u.s. species ranges allopatric; although may overlap (sympatry) in coastal regions of pacific northwest, differences in elevation tend separate them. taxonomists placed these mammals separate subgenera; merriam assigned marsh shrew atophyrax, , jackson (1928) assigned pacific water shrew neosorex. closer, dentition-based relationship assigned findley (1955), both species assigned subgenus otisorex. findley hypothesized in pleistocene, ancestors of masked , vagrant shrews (sorex cinereus , sorex vagrans, respectively) diverged; during yarmouth interglacial, american water shrew , marsh shrew diverged vagrant-shrew ancestors. 3 other sorex species evolved during sangamonian: dwarf shrew (s. nanus), southeastern shrew (sorex longirostris) , ornate shrew (sorex ornatus). findley s assignment of marsh shrew , american water shrew otisorex later reinforced biochemical , genetic studies. in 2005, findings published (based on mitochondrial dna analysis) better defined nature of relationships between marsh shrews, pacific water shrews , respective subspecies. variations in sequencing of cytochrome b mitochondrial dna assessed, , results of 2005 phylogeny marsh shrew shown below in detail.

s. bendirii palmeri (merriam, 1895)

s. b. albiventer found on olympic peninsula of washington, s . b . bendirii in cascades , southwestern british columbia , s. b. palmeri in coastal oregon. these specifications have historically been based on fur markings, skull shape , dental details of unclear significance, , validity uncertain.
