when king died in november 1797, shell of extensions had been completed. son , successor, frederick william iii of prussia, being uninterested in project, had exterior finished.


this still situation in 1830s when prince wilhelm (william), later kaiser william i, , spouse augusta moved marmorpalais while awaited completion of new residence @ babelsberg palace (1833-1835-1849). brother, king frederick william iv of prussia, known royal nostalgic romanticist , commissioned architect ludwig ferdinand hesse complete unfinished interior structure , fittings 2 side extensions between 1843 , 1848. frescos scenes nibelungenlied added outside decorate colonnade walls.


the building s technical , sanitary facilities updated when prince wilhelm (william), later kaiser wilhelm ii, , family lived in marmorpalais 1881 until acceded throne in 1888.


the last royal inhabitants of marmorpalais prince wilhelm, eldest son of kaiser wilhelm ii, , spouse cecilie, lived there of year between 1904 , 1917, when moved nearby cecilienhof palace, built them in neuer garten.


after german monarchy came end in 1918, marmorpalais placed under control of prussian palaces administration in 1926 result of settlement between free state of prussia , hohenzollern family regarding property claims. opened palace museum in 1932, restored interior furnishings 18th , 19th centuries.


toward end of world war ii palace suffered serious damage when north wing hit incendiary bomb, , main building grenade. condition further deteriorated after war, on period of time when soviet red army used venue officers mess, beginning in 1946.


in 1961, east german gdr army museum established in building. inside, historic military equipment, uniforms , historic documents on display , on outside, cannon, t-34 tank, high-speed patrol boat, mig fighter airplane , rocket exhibited. weapons removed in 1989.


starting in 1984, national people s army made plans fundamental restoration building continued fall disrepair. these plans came fruition in 1988 , work continued in late autumn 1990 after return of property palaces administration. since 14 april 2006 40 rooms have been renovated , opened public. repair of exterior surface completed in autumn 2009 after several years of restoration work.
