the archeological record shows evidence of stó:lō people in fraser valley, or s ólh téméxw, 10,000 years ago. permanent structures in chilliwack area date around 5,000 years ago. @ time of first contact europeans estimated there many 40,000 people living within stó:lō territory.
in 1857, gold discovered in fraser canyon. 1859, on 40,000 gold miners had trekked goldfields, travelling through chilliwack area. mid-1860s, several farms had grown around steamboat landings on fraser river called miller s landing, minto landing, sumas landing , chilliwack landing.
the township of chilliwack incorporated in 1873, third municipality in british columbia. initial settlement along fraser river @ chilliwack landing. steamboats main mode of transportation, carrying goods , passengers between chilliwack , new westminster. after construction of canadian pacific railway in 1885, many residents began cross fraser river @ minto landing catch train @ harrison mills.
with little room expansion along river, commercial area of town moved south junction of new westminster-yale wagon road, wellington avenue , young road, called 5 corners . large subdivision called centreville built in 1881. name centreville replaced in 1887 more popular chilliwhack. area incorporated in 1908 separate municipality, city of chilliwack. city , township co-existed 72 years. in 1984, merged form district of chilliwack. district of chilliwack became city of chilliwack in 1999.
