rules
three-second violation

the lane restricted area in players can stay limited amount of time. on levels, team on offensive (in possession of ball) prohibited stay inside lane more 3 seconds; after 3 seconds player called three-second violation result in turnover.


in fiba-sanctioned tournaments, defending team players allowed stay on key unlimited amount of time. in american professional basketball, defending team players prohibited staying in key more 3 seconds, unless player directly guarding offensive player. if player surpasses time, defending team charged defensive three-second violation, result in technical foul team ball shoots 1 free throw plus ball possession , reset of shot clock. in cases, count resets if shot hits rim or if player steps out of lane.

wally szczerbiak shoots free throw; in leagues, team of free throw shooter has @ 2 players (aside free throw shooter) on sides of key, while opposing team has three.



jason bohannon shoots free throw; in american ncaa, there can @ 3 players on each side of key during free throw.


when player shooting free throws, there number of players @ boundaries of key, each occupying slot traced @ boundaries of key. in cases, free throw shooter behind free throw line, while 3 of opponents along sides of key, 1 side 2 players, other one. 2 of opponents situated nearest basket on both sides, while 2 teammates beside 2 opponents closest basket, other player opposing team situated farthest basket. in u.s. ncaa, there many 6 players along key, opposing team allowed have many 4 players, same arrangement in nba , fiba player facing teammate farthest basket. no player along lane may enter key until shot released; player shooting free throw, , on top of key, should not pass free throw line until ball hits rim. if of offensive players violate rule, no points awarded shot and, if there no more shots remaining, ball given defending team. if defending player in lane soon, shot awarded regardless of whether shot made or missed.


note in fiba play, if shooter commits violation, automatic turnover. if shot successful , shooter not commit violation, other players commit violation, violations discarded. if players opposing teams enter key prior release of ball, jump ball done determine gets possession of ball (nba) or possession arrow rule (for other levels); in fiba play, applies if shooter misses, since successful attempt negates other penalties. in situations, lane violation penalties cannot occur if there further free throws awarded.

in nba, euroleague, , starting in 2010, in fiba , ncaa play, key has additional area, measured arc 3 feet basket (collegiate), 4 feet basket (nba), or 1.25 meters (approximately 4.1 feet) (fiba). area officially known restricted area (ra) in nba, restricted area arc in ncaa , no-charge semicircles in fiba.


its purpose stop secondary defenders taking position under basket in attempt draw offensive foul when player driving basket. if offensive player drives past primary defender on way basket , secondary defender comes over, must establish legal position outside ra draw offensive foul. if drive starts inside lower defensive box (ldb – area bottom tip of free throw circle end line between 2 3‑foot posted-up marks), secondary defender legally allowed positioned inside ra. restricted area not apply if secondary defender jumps in attempting block shot, offensive player leads leg or knee in unnatural motion or uses off arm prevent defender blocking shot. ra not extend below backboard baseline. therefore, if player drives baseline , not attempting go directly rim, ra not apply.


the restricted area arc rule implemented in ncaa men s basketball 2010–2011 season. ncaa approved adding visible restricted-area arc 3 feet center of basket in division men’s , women’s games 2011–2012 season. panel delayed implementation of arc until 2012-2013 season divisions ii , iii allow schools time plan , place restricted-area arc in home arenas. starting 2015-2016 season, ncaa raised ra arc 4 feet center of basket.
