after graduation u.s. naval academy, in december 1876, midshipman walling assigned newly commissioned uss vandalia, stationed in mediterranean sea. promoted grade of ensign in september 1877. remained on vandalia until returned boston in january 1879.
ensign walling assigned uss powhatan, flagship of north atlantic squadron, june, 1879 until june 1881. in november, 1881, walling assigned uss ranger, in pacific squadron. on ranger, worked on survey of pacific coast of mexico , central america between mazatlan, mexico , panama. in september 1884, walling promoted grade of lieutenant, junior grade.
from february 1885 march 1886, lieutenant walling assigned u. s. receiving ship uss vermont @ new york navy yard, recruiting duty. in april 1886, assigned u. s. coast survey schooner scoresby. on scoresby , senior assistant survey of natural oyster beds , instruction in oyster culture state of north carolina.
from september 1886 june 1887, walling served on uss essex sent asiatic squadron. in june, 1887, joined uss brooklyn, flagship of asiatic squadron, served until august 1888 when transferred essex, returned new york in april, 1889.
in august, 1889, walling again ordered recruiting duty on vermont, @ new york navy yard.
from december 1886 until september 1892, walling instructor in department of physics , chemistry @ u. s. naval academy. in march, 1890, promoted grade of lieutenant. in september, 1892, assigned instruction @ u. s. naval war college @ newport, rhode island.
in december, 1892, lieutenant walling joined uss kearsarge, had sunk confederate states navy cruiser css alabama @ battle of cherbourg off cherbourg, france on june 19, 1864. detached automobile torpedo instruction @ war college @ newport in july, 1893. returned kearsarge in august. on february 2, 1894, lieutenant walling aboard kearsarge along 202 other officers , men, including admiral commanding north atlantic station, when ship wrecked on roncador cay in western caribbean sea off venezuela. in april 1895, walling assigned uss atlanta in north atlantic squadron until ship decommissioned in september, 1895.
in november, 1895, walling again assigned u. s. receiving ship vermont, recruiting duty. in september 1896, detached duty electrical assistant in equipment department of new york navy yard.
in september, 1897, walling ordered serve navigator of uss wheeling in pacific squadron off alaska, walling hospitalized in april, 1898. in september, 1898, again assigned electrical assistant in equipment department @ new york navy yard.
spanish–american war , aftermath
lieutenant walling promoted lieutenant commander in march 1899. in june 1899, took detachment of officers , men on board u. s. transport uss solace duty in philippines. upon arriving @ manila in august 1899, walling sent hong kong commander-in-chief of asiatic squadron serve inspector of ordnance , equipment reconstruction of 3 gunboats raised admiral george dewey after battle of manila bay during spanish–american war. in march 1900, walling ordered u.s. naval station @ cavite, philippines, organize equipment department , construct shops @ station.
later commands , assignments
after returning philippines, in june, 1901, walling served executive officer on uss albany, in mediterranean sea. returned united states in july, 1902. in august 1902, walling became general assistant in equipment department of new york navy yard.
in may, 1904, walling began duty commandant of u. s. naval station, culebra, puerto rico, , commanding officer of uss gloucester , uss alliance. in december, 1905, walling promoted commander.
in december, 1906, commander walling became equipment officer of new york navy yard , general inspector bureau of equipment of united states department of navy, washington, d.c. vessels being built @ private shipyards on atlantic coast.

walling captain of yard @ naval station new york may 9, 1909 october 28, 1909.
from august 6, 1910 until retirement on june 11, 1911, walling commandant of naval station, san juan, puerto rico.
walling retired june 30, 1911 @ grade of commodore.
world war i
at outset of united states involvement in world war on april 2, 1917, walling returned duty inspector of engineering , ordnance material @ boston, massachusetts until november 18, 1919. relieved of duty on november 20, 1920.
