biography
early years

ryan grew in amherstview, small town west of kingston. son of john , sharron malcolm, ryan had 2 older siblings, kim , sean. @ age of nine, ryan s parents divorced , john remarried. wife deborah had 3 children, , ryan had 3 new step-siblings, jordan, reagan, , grayson. throughout 1990s, ryan s father owned , operated many restaurants, ryan worked waiter, setting nickname on idol waiter boy , in reference pop singer avril lavigne s song sk8er boi . both malcolm , lavigne attended same high school in napanee. ryan had musical debut singing @ guest appearance dad john, had solo vocal act. when john , step-mom deb opened restaurant in napanee, ryan, 13 @ time, started singing regularly dad. later brother reagan joined act, , band bit of nostalgia born.


ryan continued singing bit of nostalgia until won idol. presently, enjoys coming home reunion shows dad , brother reagan, special events.


before entering canadian idol, worked waiter @ lone star texas grill in kingston.

malcolm did not crack top 10 in first attempt awarded spot on wildcard show after which, because vote close, became 11th contestant in final group. consistency throughout final phase of competition , great song choices won him many fans , canadian idol crown.




after idol

his debut single, more released on radio day after win , public on september 30. went 4 times platinum on first day of release , stayed @ #1 on canadian singles chart 13 consecutive weeks.


on december 9, 2003, malcolm s debut album home released. debuted , peaked @ #4 on canadian albums chart, , certified platinum, selling 170,000 copies , earning juno nomination best pop album.


later month, malcolm participated in world idol , shared stage elton john , victoria beckham. alongside fellow idol friend kelly clarkson, placed sixth. followed tour of eastern canada various guests, including jacynthe, gary beals, , audrey de montigny. returned europe 2 more times year perform annie lennox @ royal albert hall in london perform in prague.


he represented canada @ national children s peace concert in czech republic. sang national anthem @ 2004 grey cup.


he made acting debut in recent ross petty pantomime snow white , group of 7 @ elgin theatre in toronto fellow finalists gary beals , billy klippert, season 2 finalist elena juatco. ryan spent time traveling in africa , south america, many of llf s songs inspired. in 2006 , 2007 two-time host of toronto s sketch comedy show sunday night live.


as of 2013, ran restaurant along girlfriend, rebecca in el castillo, costa rica called tres cabras (3 goats).


after successful run tres cabras, ryan and, wife, rebecca closed restaurant , have since moved kingston, ontario.


in 2016 ryan attained realtor license , has settled while in small village called bayfield ontario. listed first house sale. ryan , rebecca have become innkeepers @ ashwood inn.
