this species resembles vanessa cardui ground colour darker both on uppersides , undersides, , orange markings deeper , richer in tint. differs follows: underside forewing: ochraceous orange-red on disc, , across cell proportionately of less extent, , uniform, not getting paler towards apex of cell; upper 4 spots of preapical transverse series on black apical area minute. 5 inches (13 cm) in length. hindwing: postdiscal transverse band narrower , shorter, not extending below vein 1, margined inwardly series of broad black subcrescentic marks; tornal angle small patch of violet scales bordered inwardly short black transverse line. underside darker in v. cardui, orange red on disc , in cell on forewing restricted on upperside; 3 small transversely placed blue spots beyond cell. hindwing: mottling comparatively dark, purplish blade, slender white margins, shaded on disc rich dark olive-brown; postdiscal series of ocelli dark , obscure; inner subterminal transverse series of blue, , outer slenderer transverse series of black lunules. cilia of both forewings , hindwings white, alternated brown. antenna black, tipped pale ochraceous; head, thorax , abdomen dark olive-brown pubescence; beneath, palpi, thorax , abdomen pale ochraceous brown.
the vanessa indica not reported pest on crop on ramie causes considerable damage feeding on young tender leaves affect growth of plant. larvae of insect feed on tender young leaves shown in picture. adults lay eggs on tender leaves in larvae emerge , feeds on young tender leaves preferably @ neck region of leaves, due leaves hanging position , latter dry. caterpillar feeds on young leaves , later fold leaves in such way both margins attached silky web , pupation takes place inside folded leaf. later adult emerges butterfly.
