background

cpi(ml) originated internationalists in ireland , group started on 9 december 1965 hardial bains, while working microbiologist @ trinity college, dublin. efforts culminated in necessity change conference, @ delegates canada, india, ireland , britain pledged build marxist-leninist parties in countries. rejected nikita khrushchev s policies, regarded revisionist, , followed marxist-leninist course. in 1968, internationalists came public attention organised protest against visit of king baudouin of belgium trinity college. in 1969, renamed irish communist movement (marxist-leninist). on 4 july 1970 relaunched cpi(ml), michael hehir named leading national spokesman. icm opposed warsaw pact invasion of czechoslovakia.


cpi(ml) participated in 1974 uk parliamentary election. had candidates in 3 constituencies in northern ireland. in total got 540 votes, between 0.2%-0.5% in each constituency. cpi(ml) member david vipond stood in 1973 monaghan by-election, receiving 157 first preference votes. vipond later stood election in dublin along other cpi(ml) members.


cpi(ml) ran bookstore in dublin called progressive books , periodicals @ 25 essex st, dublin 8. @ various times cpi(ml) had bookshops in limerick , cork. in 1970s, group s general secretary carole reakes.

cpi(ml) upheld mao zedong thought - particularly in 1970-71 period during entire issues of red patriot dedicated mao zedong flatly rejected mao zedong after sino-albanian split of 1978, after upheld writings of albanian leader enver hoxha. cpi(ml) organised several delegations albania, beginning in june 1979, (when delegation met ramiz alia); cpi(ml) delegations there continued during 80s. cpi(ml) supported communist movements of vietnam , cambodia. expressed support gang of 4 faction in china.


the troubles

the cpi(ml) critical of other irish left-wing parties, including workers party of ireland, irish labour party , communist party of ireland, whom cpi(ml) accused of being revisionist , of not supporting ira s campaign in north. hostile brendan clifford , british , irish communist organisation, support partition of ireland , british army in northern ireland cpi(ml) regarded complete betrayal of maoism.


the cpi(ml) supported armed struggle reunification of ireland , initiated spirit of freedom committee work irish republicans. other groups created party workers , unemployed movement , communist youth union of ireland (marxist-leninist).


in 1980s, cpi(ml) major force in students union movement, member brendan doris becoming president of union of students in ireland (usi), while members tommy graham , brian stone became president of college of technology (bolton street) students union in successive years. tommy graham current editor of history ireland.


later years

with collapse of socialism in albania, cpi(ml) opened relations workers party of korea , signed 1992 pyongyang declaration. general secretary rod eley visited north korea in 1999. in 2003 cpi(ml) disbanded, following long period of passivity. upon dissolution, general secretary of cpi(ml) rod eley. following group s dissolution, former leading member brendan doris stood in dublin west by-election in 2011 chomhdháil phobail/the people’s convention (cppc), achieving 95 first preference votes.
