public awareness increased works of eccentric collector thomas hawkins, pre-adamite believing ichthyosaurs monstrous creations devil: memoirs of ichthyosauri , plesiosauri of 1834 , book of great sea-dragons of 1840. first work illustrated mezzotints john samuelson templeton. these publications contained scientific descriptions , represented first textbooks of subject. in summer of 1834, hawkins, after taxation william buckland , gideon mantell, sold extensive collection, largest of kind in world, british museum. however, curator koenig discovered fossils had been heavily restored plaster, applied italian artist lucca; of attractive piece, ichthyosaurus specimen, entire tail fake. turned out professor buckland had been aware of beforehand, , museum forced reach settlement hawkins, , gave fake parts lighter colour differentiate them authentic skeletal elements.
