henry dundas, 1st viscount melville


the politician henry dundas (28 april 1742 – 28 may 1811) bought 20,000-acre (8,100 ha) estate in 1784. dundas commissioned design new house architect henry holland in 1798, although house built between 1803 , 1808 work of william stirling. surrounding parkland laid out dundas, possibly input holland. in 1802, dundas elevated peerage of united kingdom viscount melville , baron dunira.


the estate sold in 1824 sir robert dundas of beechwood. son sir david dundas had house, flooded regularly, demolished , rebuilt design of william burn, constructed terraces. in 1864, david bryce designed additions house. dundas had established pinetum late-19th century, , other improvements made across estate.


the dundas family sold dunira time before 1920. new owner, mr w.g. macbeth, commissioned thomas mawson, landscape gardener, redesign gardens in 1920s. during second world war, house used military convalescent hospital. of house destroyed fire in 1948 leaving office court standing. used residence until demolished in 2005. in 2000, thomas mawson garden partially restored part of channel 4 television programme lost gardens.
