the new quadrangle (known new quad or nb quad, new buildings) connected old quadrangle, across new college lane, bridge of sighs, designed thomas graham jackson. north-western corner of new quad taken indian institute building, not part of hertford college. of new buildings 20th-century designs jackson, except later frontage onto holywell street, on northern side of quad. quad entered through gate onto catte street, opposite clarendon building. new quad used undergraduate accommodation.


the significant building in quad octagon, north of gate on catte street, houses middle common room. 16th-century chapel of st mary virgin @ smithgate, formed bastion in town walls. original carving of scene of annunciation can seen catte street, beside gate.
